The Kibera Girls Soccer Academy |
|
Located
in the heart of Africa’s largest slum which is situated in Nairobi, the
Soccer Academy is an informal school that started in 2004. Its founder
and director Abdul Kassim, used to coach an all girls soccer team of
teenage girls living in his community within Kibera. Forced to stay
home either to work, to marry or simply not to have money “wasted” on a
girl’s education, these girls were denied the right to attend school
and together the girls and Mr. Kassim decided to change their fate by
the establishment of the Kibera Girl’s Soccer Academy.
The Academy’s mission is to provide free secondary education for the
girls made vulnerable by poverty and gender inequality. In addition to
their education, the Academy aims to provide the girls with an
environment where they can thrive and develop through extra curricular
activities, health trainings, and skills development. The first class
had 26 students, and the second had 21.
We commend and honor the work of the Director, teachers and all the
students whose commitment to making a difference in the lives of young
African women is nothing short of inspiring! They are living proof that
each person can make a difference – all it takes is the will and the
vision.

2008 SFH collaborated with a powerful organization working to transform the lives of young people in Kenya through urban ministry. Established in 2000, K-Krew has its roots in radio and media as a platform for engaging young people to live boldly and fulfill their God given potential. To date K-Krew’s reach expands well beyond media as they work in community and social development, high school outreach, abstinence based HIV-prevention, positive role-modeling and more.
K-Krew was one of the lead groups that took a stand on peace, healing and unity following PEV. SFH is looking forward to partner more with K-Krew in 2009, especially in identifying more young people who are in need of educational sponsorship!

For those who are in the Coptic community, you may know of a band called "Trinity" who released an album in 2001, entitled "Now I'll Live". Trinity has a standing commitment to contribute to the cause of those in poverty in Africa. As a result, SFH and Trinity have teamed up in order to work together in the fight against poverty.
In early 2009, "Now I'll Live" will be available on iTunes, Amazon, and other online stores, as well as for CD purchase. Proceeds from these sales will go directly to SFH to foster and enable our work in East Africa! Music that makes a difference!
Trinity is more than a band. Trinity is an artist collective of
musicians, singers, poets, artists and visionaries. "Now I'll Live" is
the outcome when 20 of these artists came together, collaborated, and
worked towards a single goal.
