kids-working.jpgSamuel is an orphan currently living with a single grandmother.  Sam’s mother died while he was 3 years old from AIDS.  He and his 3 brothers were taken in by their grandmother but later as the other 3 boys grew up they all dropped out of school due to finances and lack of even food.  They opted to start doing manual labor and moved out to live on their own in the slums.  Sam’s grandmother continued to urge Sam to continue with primary school despite all the sufferings they were going though.

The grandmother was working as a casual laborer until her health deteriorated due to old age and could not work any longer. She later started a small business on the roadside selling roast maize and peanuts to earn a living.  This money could not sustain them.  Sam cleared primary school (8th grade) and joined a school in the slums however, the grandmother could not afford the fees. He dropped out of school and started working as a manual laborer, digging trenches, construction etc, as boys often do who are not in school, regardless of age. After almost one year out of school his grandmother approached SFH for assistance,

We met Sam and saw that he was a student of potential, whose circumstances prevented him from advancing where he wanted to be.   Sam became a recipient of an SFH scholarship, when he was then admitted to Mikuini Sec School where he joined the 10th Grade.

Sam's favorite subject is History and he wants to be a lawyer.
